The Other Guide to Tampere: Comic Conversations on Urbanism (2015, SAFA) is a collaborative comic book project implemented together with architects Anna Hakula and Jon Thureson, contributed by Siina Levonoja.
I illustrated the comic, photographing the locations and drawing the characters, and contributed to the interviews and writing process. The layout is designed together with Jon Thureson.
Two pressings, around 3000 copies in all, were published and distributed free of charge all over the city. The project got nice reception in the local media.
The Other Guide to Tampere presents severall slighly different perspectives to a city. The guide deals with local phenomena and asks questions about the city and its people. The comic engages in conversation with a variety of local characters: a researcher, an activist, a planner, etc.
The other guide to Tampere is a ficumentary in comic form – the characters and the conversations between them are based on actuall interactions.
Whether you are a tourist who would like to experience the city the way local people do, or you are a resident, who would like to experience the ciity like a tourist, The Other Guide to Tampere might just have a place in your pocket.
It wouldn’t be a guide without a map. With the help of the map enclosed, you’rre able to follow where the events in this book arre taking place. Nevertheless, we advise you to go get lost – it’s the only way to discover something new.
